Love Island Check-In: Superlatives

,
14–22 minutes

I have been living for the drama, the bathing suits, the snogging, the bombshells, the recouplings, and the villa for the past few weeks watching Love Island (UK)‘s eleventh season. There has been no shortage of entertainment from this season’s cast of gorgeous singles and we haven’t even gotten to Casa Amor yet. Before we jump into that powder keg, looming ahead at the end of the next episode, I am going to provide each of this year’s islanders with a Superlative.

Grace came into the villa with a bang and has been serving looks and drama ever since. The fact that she and Joey had a history outside of the villa that they were quick to rekindle was juicy. The fact that Joey completely flipped on her the second another blonde bombshell walked into the villa was even juicer! The way Grace has carried herself through this as a rational and loyal islander has completely won me over. Oh yeah and did I mention she is absolutely stunning?

I am hard core rooting for this girl to absolutely tear it up in Casa Amor. Go Grace, go!

The heart wants what it wants and if I were in Mallorca, I would want Wil. First of all, he is handsome as all hell. I mean just look at the guy! But on top of that he is alluringly shy, incredibly sweet with Uma, and has tattoos that will make you swoon. This show is filled to the brim with beautiful people, but if I had to choose one guy it would absolutely have to be Wil.

I am interested to see how his journey will continue – Casa can make or break people – but up to this point I can confidently say that I have very much enjoyed gazing longingly at him on my TV screen.

Jess is a petite girl with a lot of opinions and she isn’t afraid to share them. She claims to be a truth teller who puts it all out there, but this girl is petty to the bone and it makes for some entertainingly frustrating television.

Initially paired up with Ronnie, Jess was quick to focus her attention to him and only him. Unfortunately for her, he was just as quick to drop and swoop over to Harriet. Considering the fact that Jess didn’t really seem to like Harriet in the first place, this was a huge blow to her ego. Even though a lot of it was deserved – I am no fan of Harriet’s, let’s be clear on that – Jess definitely found a sick joy out of making little digs and passive comments toward Harriet. She was aiming all her petty energy toward this girl and denied it each time she was challenged on it. You could practically hear her squealing with glee when Ronnie did the same shit he did to her to Harriet when Tiffany walked in.

But the moment Jess secured this superlative didn’t come until after Tiffany had left the villa. Once she was gone, Jess clearly wanted to pounce back onto Ronnie only to find out he approached Harriet first. Her face said it all and her actions were as petty as they come. It was definitely a “thou doth protest too much” situation with Ronnie and Jess. If she was as over him as she said she was, then why was his name always in her mouth? If she was more angry at Ronnie than she was Harriet, then why was she constantly twisting words and making jabs at Harriet? It’s not giving girl’s girl energy and that has been very disappointing to watch.

There are a lot of things I have enjoyed about Jess so far this season. Even though it crosses the line a lot of the time (read: a lot) she is outspoken, keeps people honest, isn’t afraid to speak up, and has a killer sense of style. Unfortunately, her pettiness has made her one of my least favorite islanders. Not to mention all of this is over Ronnie who is so not worth it.

With Ronnie and Harriet gone, I am eager to see how Jess handles things. Now that the object of her affection and target of her pettiness are out of the villa, how will she behave?

I will keep this short and sweet, because the truth of the matter is Ciaran is not my cup of tea. He has his funny moments, but underneath it all is an immature, petty, child who is only going to hurt people in the end.

People seem to forget that despite his “adorable” relationship with Nicole, Ciaran started his time in the villa by fully making out with Harriet and then gaslighting her into thinking that he wanted nothing to do with her. Then, he randomly brought it up again in front of everyone and added insult to injury. Boys being petty is such an ick.

My expectations for Ciaran in Casa Amor are very low. Sure he said he loved Nicole, but this kid doesn’t know what love is for one single second. It’s giving Curtis dropping Amy like a bad habit at even the whiff of another girl.

Samantha had all the trappings of an amazing Love Island contestant: a little crazy, clingy, petty, dramatic, self-sabotaging, and absolutely hilarious. Plus, she has had the most indecipherable accent of the season thus far. She had the ability to be both intentionally and unintentionally funny which is a gift in and of itself that deserves to recognized. All of these things came together to make her an absolute delight to watch. I will never forgive Joey Essex for taking her away from us far too early in the season. We should have gotten more of her over reactions, pity parties, double-chin laughing face, and genuine friendships with the girls. You deserve so much better, sweetie! Miss you loads.

I spent much of his time on the show being baffled by Ronnie. Not only do I have no idea why the ladies were so drawn to him – he must be cuter in person…right? – but I was also gob smacked by how quickly he could jump from girl to girl. His fuckboy energy was so strong yet felt so mismatched to the package it came in. All this took a turn during the heartrate challenge when I realized that even though he is a colossal douchebag who – to borrow a term from the Bachelor franchise – did not come here for the right reasons, he was hands down the funniest guy in the villa. Eye rolls turned into genuine laughs and I have to hand it to the guy, I didn’t end up hating him nearly as much as I thought it would.

In the end I was a little sad to see Ronnie go, but such is life in the Love Island villa.

Ugh Harriet. Where do I even begin? There are so many reasons to be annoyed at Harriet. Her ridiculously plentiful faux eyelashes that she never takes out. Her aggressive contour. Her little dance routine she does for Joey in the hideaway. Her blatant pettiness and immaturity. Her immediate infusion of drama into this season – she was deemed least relationship material by the boys in the villa, how dare they!? The way she says the word “like.” The Ciaran situation. The Ronnie situation….

I know that seemed like a lot, but that is just scratching the surface with little miss Harriet. Her ability to annoy me and many others in the audience clearly impacted her shorter than expected tenure on the show. Can’t say that I was upset to watch her pack her bags and leave the villa. I might have even smiled a little.

The only person in the villa who ever truly matched Harriet’s freak was Mr. Joey Essex. Though people living in the UK and the islanders all seem to know who this man is, me – a simple American – is completely unaware of his existence and completely immune to his “charms.” This guy makes me want to barf. I have no idea why so many female islanders who I genuinely enjoy have gotten caught up in his web. It’s a head scratcher for sure.

It’s the kind of annoyance that makes me roll my eyes at everything he does and everything about him. His sunglasses are gross. The way he struts around the bedroom while the boys are all getting ready? Cringe. His blindingly white veneers are creepy as hell. Even his voice makes my skin crawl. There is always one person every season who makes me recoil in this way and I am happy to say Joey is the Islander who annoys me the most this season.

Though he landed this superlative, there were several others I had brewing for him that were too good not to include here:

Being low-key on Love Island is a double-edged sword. It makes part of the audience love you because you are real and relatable, but it also doesn’t provide the audience with enough to want to keep you around for the long run. Mimii has walked a fine line this season, but has thankfully done enough to stay and capture our hearts. While she has spent most of her time coupled up with Ayo just lounging around being adorable, the way she handled the love triangle with him and Uma was decidedly unchill. We are still riding the high of that bold move – that paid off by the way – but I fear that it may wear off soon.

I adore this girl and am very drawn to her calm demeanor. She is sweet, but still has a spit-fire attitude inside of her. She is certainly one of my favorite members of this cast and I hope the vibes stay chill with her through Casa Amor.

Sometimes chill is a dangerous quality to have on Love Island and Omar definitely fell victim to that. While he deserved much better, he might have held himself back a bit. Our guy Omar was extremely laid back and chill – and maybe said “deffo” too much – and that ultimately bit him in the butt. He could have been more aggressive in getting to know some of the ladies that caught his eye, but instead chose to sit back a bit.

When he did finally pursue Matilda in a more straightforward way, it seemed to be too little too late. He was ultimately jilted by Sean who was much more forthcoming and seemed to play a bit more into the energy Matilda was looking for. You hate to see it happen to a such a good guy, but that is just how the Love Island cookie crumbles.

Patsy had so much going for her. She was only in the villa for a hot minute in the grand scheme of things, but during that time she ticked a lot of the boxes that I look for in a good Love Island girlie:

So much potential, but so little pay off.

Munveer was handsome, sweet, and all together unremarkable during his time in the villa. Yet, I couldn’t help but wonder how successful he would have been if given the chance. There were a few islanders who didn’t make immediate connections, but stuck around long enough to have a bombshell who was a bit of them come in. Unfortunately for Munveer – and the audience – we had to deal with Sean and not him.

Where do I begin with Ms. Uma? Not only is she absolutely stunning, but she has a lovely personality to match. Her quirkiness and endearing sense of humor won me over pretty immediately. My question is: why aren’t the boys in the villa treating her like the queen of the season that she should be treated like. Every man in this place should have been pushing each other aside to try and get time with this woman, why they haven’t been doing that is an absolute shock to me.

Wil is a lucky guy to have landed the attention of such a beautiful and loyal girl. He better not fumble the bag, because he might have gotten the best of them.

Though he hasn’t been here for very long, it’s clear that Trey is not getting the attention he deserves in the villa. I mean look at this guy, he is undeniably handsome and seems to have settled into the villa quite nicely. It’s shocking to me that more girls aren’t paying attention to his presence. It’s true that he has fallen victim to timing in that Jess was the only real girl not in a situation when he entered the villa. Perhaps Casa Amore will be kind to him.

I’m not buying what Nicole is selling. I’m not sure what it is about her that I am not into because at face value, she is the type of Islander I usually root for in the villa. She is adorable, has a cute accent, has a good connection, and is a girl’s girl. Yet I find myself cringing at so much of what she does and not understanding the hype around this little Welsh girl. I can’t exactly pinpoint one reason, but here are some of the reasons why she is not the girl for me:

I am nervous that she and Ciaran will end up winning and we will get two undeserving winning couples in a row out of Love Island UK (justice for Whitney and Lochan!). Fingers crossed we go in another direction, but it’s not looking good so far.

When it came time for the first recoupling and ultimately the first dumping from the island, I was so sure Sean would be the first to depart. Yet somehow, here he still is. *sigh* This guy does absolutely nothing for me. He’s very cookie-cutter cute, which bores me. He’s cheesy as hell, which gives me the ick. He’s a try-hard, which is a also an ick. He’s just not it. But the fans and the fellow islanders love him. I am truly baffled by it.

When Matilda came in I was rooting for her to go for literally any guy but Sean because I wanted him gone. I was sick of watching him be so into Harriet and then all of a sudden be all in on Jess. I was sick of watching him try to guess what sweets girls were. I was sick of the candy man jokes. SICK OF HIM! Yet everything that didn’t work on me worked like gangbusters on Matilda. When he announced to the whole villa that they had their first kiss and she thought it was adorable, I was gagging. This man must be stopped, we cannot keep letting him get away with this!

In the lore of Love Island, bombshells emanate their definition in two ways. First, they are gorgeous people who one might label a “bombshell.” Second, they are meant to stir the pot and blow shit up. Jessy walked in and owned both parts of her bombshell persona without having to try very hard. Look amazing and get Joey’s head to turn? Check. Blow up Joey’s relationship with Grace and send the villa into a tizzy? Double check.

It’s always fun to see an impactful and successful bombshell come in. To see how weak some of these people are and how they can be willing to throw a connection away so quickly for someone else is part of the magic of this show. Yes, it also helped that Jessy exposed Joey for the deviant he is and saved the lovely Grace from his clutches. I loved seeing that.

Konnor had all the makings for a successful bombshell…on paper. He is an absolute delight to look at, a rugby guy, and the girl’s were salivating for another man to come in and shake things up. Alas, Konnor has done nothing more than hit me with a jump scare at least once an episode when he shows up and I had completely forgotten he was there. Nothing this man has done has been remotely close to bombshell behavior. Sure he stole Grace from Joey, but then he did nothing about it and when he tried to explain it just put a word salad together with an awkward smile.

Shake my head Konnor with a K. You had so much going for you, but all you’ve done so far is be a giant dud.

If you forgot about Tiffany, that’s alright, I did too! If she hadn’t been involved in one of the many chapters of the Ronnie drama saga, she would have came and went without so much as a peep. This girl had the personality of a piece of toast, the teeth of a deranged Bravo star, and the plastic surgery history of a divorcee.

I’m sorry to say that this girl is nothing to write home about.

Who? Oh yeah, Sam was the first guy to go home. I had to include him here, but truthfully this guy made no impact in the villa. He did, however, make an impact in my living room when my friend and I watched the premiere. Both of us were taken aback by how cute this muscly, tattooed hairdresser was…but it seems we were the only ones.

Matilda is the cutest damn thing in this villa and I am prepared to die on that hill. She is cute as a button, confident as hell, a true girl’s girl, and a fantastic bombshell. I have enjoyed each minute of her time on this season and am keeping my legs and fingers crossed that she finds someone, anyone better than Sean in Casa Amore because oh my god is she too good for him.

I have such a crush on Ayo. I think in the grand scheme of this season he is my unproblematic favorite. All of the positive words I have thrown around on this post are pretty much applicable to this boy. He’s handsome, sweet, funny. He has made strong friendships and has an adorable relationship with Mimii. His sense of style is fabulous – even when he trots around in his boxer briefs. He is just the best.

I am rooting so hard for him and Mimii, I think their relationship has what it takes to last. Let’s see if Casa has anything to say about that…
